Bernard Zanne

This is part 31 in a series on Daniel Farlati’s Illyricum Sacrum.

Bernad Zanne (lt. Bernardius Zannius. Also known as Bernardi Zane) was a highly educated priest who enjoyed the favor of both Pope Alexander VI and Leonardo Loredan. Alexander promised to make him the next Archbishop of Spalato. He assumed the role in 1503.

Much of his time in Spalato was spent dealing with Ottoman raids. In 1512, He was summoned to the Fifth Lateran Council and delivered a speech calling for Christian nations to unify against the threat of the Ottomans. Toma Niger, who had accompanied Bernard to Rome, sent the speech to Marco Marulić1 along with a letter of praise for it. Toma’s Letter and Bernard’s speech were published by Giacomo Mazzocchi in Oratio Habita in Prima Sessione Lateranensis Concilii.

Bernard is listed as present at the council in 1514. He is said to have handed off the duties of Arhcbihsop to his successor, Andreas Cornelius. He lived out his days in Rome for 3 more years, before passing away.

  1. Marko also thought highly of Bernard, writing of him in his translation of Kempis’ Imitiation of Christ ↩︎
