Domnius De Judicibus
This is part 29 in a series on Daniel Farlati’s Illyricum Sacrum.
Joannes Lucius believed Domnius to be of the Luccari family and that he inherited the name “De Judicibus” by some other means. Domnius was elected archbishop in 1410, but it would not be until 1416 that he would be officially recognized.
Domnius was elected shortly after the Pisan Pope John XXIII came to power. Spalato’s control had changed hands between King Sigismund, a support of John, and Ladislaus of Naples, a supporter of Pope Benedict XII. With Sigismund in control in 1410, he rejected Domnius and requested John reinstate Andrew Gualdo as Archbishop. John attempted to compromise, offering Peter of Pag. Sigismund rejected Peter as well. Sigismund wrote to the clergy of Spalato ordering them to only recognize Andrew.
Sigismund’s opinions changed when Domnius traveled to him in 1413. He convinced Sigismund that Duke Hrvoje was acting against him and the citizens of Spalato. Sigismund stripped Hrvoje of his power, and recommended Domnius for consecration to John.
Domnius remained archbishop until 1420, when Spalato switched hands again to the Venetians. Domnius, having been an ally of Sigismund, fled to his protection in Hungary. He would be replaced by the more Venetian friendly bishop Peter of Pag.
